The Effects of GLP-1 Medications on Your Skin: Collagen Loss, Hydration, and Dullness

GLP-1 receptor agonists, such as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro, have gained widespread popularity for their ability to aid in weight loss and manage type 2 diabetes. However, as more individuals turn to these medications, I have seen many of my clients are noticing unexpected changes in their skin. From collagen loss to decreased hydration and dullness, let’s explore how GLP-1 medications may impact your skin and what you can do to maintain a healthy, glowing complexion.

How GLP-1 Medications Affect Your Skin

1. Collagen Loss and Skin Elasticity

Collagen is the protein responsible for keeping skin firm, plump, and youthful. Rapid weight loss, which often occurs with GLP-1 medications, can contribute to a decrease in collagen production. As the skin adjusts to significant weight changes, it may appear looser, leading to increased fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging.

How to Combat Collagen Loss:

  • Incorporate collagen-boosting ingredients like Retinoids, antioxidants specifically Vitamin C, peptides and Hyaluronic acids into your skincare routine. My favorite product for this Retinal B3 or the Antioxidant Peptide Serum from Face Reality.

  • Consider a custom treatment that help boost skins collagen. Schedule a complementary consultation and we can talk more about what exact services I would recommend!

2. Decrease in Skin Hydration

Many individuals on GLP-1 medications report increased dehydration. Because these medications slow digestion and reduce thirst signals, the skin may become drier than usual. Dehydrated skin can appear dull, flaky, and more prone to irritation.

How to Keep Skin Hydrated:

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

  • Use hydrating skincare products containing hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and glycerin. My favorite product is new from Face Reality and it is the HydraRemedy Gel Serum.

  • Incorporate a humidifier in your living space to combat dryness from the environment.

3. Increased Dullness and Lack of Radiance

A lack of proper hydration and decreased skin elasticity can contribute to a dull, tired appearance. When the skin isn’t getting enough moisture or essential nutrients, it loses its natural glow.

How to Restore Radiance:

  • Exfoliate regularly using gentle acids (AHAs/BHAs) to remove dead skin cells.

  • Use brightening skincare products with niacinamide and vitamin C to revive a youthful glow. My favorite product for brightening/correcting is Cyto-Comm from Circadia.

Final Thoughts

While GLP-1 medications offer incredible benefits for weight management and diabetes control, they can have unintended effects on the skin. By understanding how these medications impact collagen, hydration, and radiance, you can take proactive steps to maintain healthy, glowing skin. Prioritizing hydration, a nutrient-dense diet, and an effective skincare regimen can help counteract these changes and keep your skin looking its best.
